Step 1: Complete your Mechanical Engineering (B.E./B.Tech)
You must have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.
A 50-60% grade point average is generally required.
There are no backlogs.
Step 2: Obtain a CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)
This is a mandatory ID for seamen.
You will receive it after completing pre-sea training.
Step 3: Enroll in a Pre-Sea Training Course – GME (Postgraduate Marine Engineering) Course
Duration: 1 year
Requirements:
Age: Generally up to 28 years
Physical fitness (6/6 vision without color blindness)
Institutes: Approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) of India.

Step 4: Obtain Sponsorship (optional, but recommended)
Many shipping companies offer sponsorship after passing the written exam, interview, and medical examinations.
A sponsored placement means the company can cover your training costs and offer a job after the course.
Step 5: Complete Onboard Training
After the GME course, you will work onboard as a trainee marine engineer (also called a junior engineer) for 6 to 9 months.
