Step 1: Complete your Mechanical Engineering (B.E./B.Tech)

You must have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.

A 50-60% grade point average is generally required.

    There are no backlogs.

Step 2: Obtain a CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)

This is a mandatory ID for seamen.

You will receive it after completing pre-sea training.

Step 3: Enroll in a Pre-Sea Training Course – GME (Postgraduate Marine Engineering) Course

    Duration: 1 year

    Requirements:

Age: Generally up to 28 years

Physical fitness (6/6 vision without color blindness)

Institutes: Approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) of India.

    Some recognized institutes:

    1. Indian Maritime University (IMU)
    2. Great Eastern Institute of Maritime Studies (GEIMS)
    3. Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies
    4. Tolani Maritime Institute

Step 4: Obtain Sponsorship (optional, but recommended)

Many shipping companies offer sponsorship after passing the written exam, interview, and medical examinations.

A sponsored placement means the company can cover your training costs and offer a job after the course.

    Step 5: Complete Onboard Training

After the GME course, you will work onboard as a trainee marine engineer (also called a junior engineer) for 6 to 9 months.
