Besides its beautiful natural landscapes, Kurseong is also home to a death road, a headless ghost, a haunted school, and countless ghost stories. We recently visited Dow Hill, Victoria School, and Dow Hill Church, and in this article, we share our experience at Dow Hill.

Local legends tell of a headless boy haunting the road and forest, as well as a woman dressed in gray, and one sees a red eye and feels watched. The school itself is said to be haunted, and there are reports of strange noises and strange occurrences, especially during the winter holidays when it is closed.

The fainthearted should certainly avoid the ‘death road,’ which lies between the Dow Hill Road and the Forest office. The local woodcutters have had a harrowing time watching the headless ghost of a young boy walking and disappearing into the forest. People have reported cases of being followed and constantly watched over by an unseen entity. Some have even seen a red eye peering at them. There is even a ghost of a woman dressed in grey. Such bad is the air of these forests that unfortunate visitors either lost their mental balance or ended up killing themselves.
Victoria school is near the forest
Here in the woods of Dow Hill where numerous unnatural deaths seem to have taken place in the past, is situated the 100-year-old Victoria Boys High School, which are pervaded by the dark vibes of the haunted forest. Legend has it that the high school has been at the centre of several untimely and unexplained deaths and the paranormal activities are simply a result of the same.The locals have heard loud whisperings and sound of footsteps when the school remains closed during the winter vacations from December to March.

The most widespread legend revolves around a headless boy who wanders along the road and disappears into the forest.

Dow Hill is now closed for normal tourists by the Government of West Bengal. But any how we visit the church. When I enter the church road, I really feel something is there, someone looking at us or someone is following us. Moreover, the place was abnormally silent. I don’t say horror, but something really bad with this place.
Other Haunted Phenomena
People have reportedly seen a woman dressed in gray with red eyes and felt constantly watched or followed.
Victoria Boys’ High School
The school, located near the forest, is also said to be haunted. Locals have reportedly heard whispers and footsteps during the winter holidays.
Death Road
The “Death Road,” a stretch between the school and the forestry office, is particularly associated with these spooky stories.

Local Beliefs and Avoidances

- We talked with a local tea shop owner, who told us that sometimes they heard someone calling them by their name at night when they closed their shop or passed through the pine forest.
