Starting August 1, 2025, a new set of UPI rules will go into effect. If you regularly use apps like Paytm, PhonePe, GPay, or any other UPI platform, you’ll be interested to know what changes will be implemented. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees the UPI ecosystem, is introducing these new limits to ease pressure on the system and reduce issues like payment delays and failed transactions.
While these changes might not affect how you check out at your local grocery store, they do impose limits on things like balance inquiries, status updates, and more. NPCI says the goal is to make UPI smoother, more reliable, and less prone to outages, especially during peak hours. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming UPI rules.
What are the new UPI transaction limits from August 1?
Starting next month, UPI users will only be able to check their account balance 50 times per day. Additionally, the number of times a user can view bank accounts linked to their phone number will be limited to 25 times per day. These new limits are being added to reduce unnecessary traffic on the system, which NPCI says contributes to slowdowns and interruptions during heavy usage.
Are there any changes to UPI Auto Pay features?
Yes. NPCI is introducing fixed time slots for UPI Auto Pay transactions. This means that scheduled payments (such as auto payments, subscriptions, utility bills, or monthly installments) will be processed at specific intervals rather than randomly throughout the day. It’s a small change, but it should help reduce congestion on the platform and improve overall speed during regular usage hours.
Will these changes affect all UPI users?
In short, yes. Whether you use UPI once a day or 20 times a day, the new limits apply to all users across all platforms. However, if you don’t constantly update your payment status or check your balance multiple times, you’re unlikely to notice much of a difference. These updates are primarily aimed at frequent users who unwittingly overload the system with repeated requests.
What is the maximum payment allowed by UPI after the update?
Interestingly, there are no changes to the current UPI payment limit. Transaction limits remain unchanged: up to Rs 1 lakh per transaction for most cases and up to Rs 5 lakh for certain categories such as healthcare or education. The August 1 update does not affect these limits.
Is any action required by users for these new rules?
You don’t need to take any immediate action. The changes will be automatically implemented through your UPI apps. Just be aware of the new limits to avoid unnecessary transaction blocks throughout the day.
Do these changes affect payments to merchants and billers?
Yes, but only to the extent that automatic payment schedules can now follow the new fixed intervals. Businesses that rely on automated UPI collections may need to adapt to the new schedules, but for most users (whether paying for a mobile top-up or a subscription), things will continue to operate normally.
